Private Pilot Certification

Basic Requirements to Obtain a Private Pilot Certificate:

  • Be at least 17 years old (you can solo at age 16).
  • Have the ability to read, speak, and understand English.
  • Pass a routine FAA Medical Examination.
  • Successfully complete a computer-based pilot knowledge test.
  • Successfully complete a practical test (in the flight environment).
  • 40 hours of total flight time, including:
    • At least 20 hours with an instructor (called dual time)
    • At least 10 hours by yourself (called solo time)

Estimated Cost to Obtain a Private Pilot Certificate:

The requirements listed above are the legal minimums required by the FAA. A good price range to budget for a license today is $5,800 to $7000. Costs may be lower or higher depending on each individual's circumstance.

The best way to minimize your cost is to train on a regular basis. At Tailwind Flight Center we recommend that you try to fly two to three times per week before you solo, and at least once a week after solo. Skipping a week here and there certainly will not hurt your overall progress, but more frequent training produces much quicker results.
